あそこ: the place away from both of you

あそこ points to a place away from both the speaker and the listener. If two people are standing together, it is the location both can point toward in the distance. It can also recall a place both people already know, even when nobody is physically pointing at it.

Build the three-place map

Japanese separates place words by conversational position. ここ is near the speaker. そこ is near the listener, or in the listener’s area. あそこ is away from both.

Think of the conversation as a small map with two pins. One pin marks the speaker, and one marks the listener. A place outside both immediate areas belongs naturally to あそこ.

The location is treated as distant from both people in the exchange.

This fits when the speaker can indicate a location at some distance. If the restroom is right beside the speaker, ここ would fit better.

When the place is already shared

Distance is not always measured in meters. If both people know the place being discussed, あそこ can mean “that place we both know.”

The sentence assumes that both people can recover the location from prior experience or context.

When you hear a place word, picture where the speaker and listener are standing. Then ask whether the location is near one of them, far from both, or already shared in memory. This viewpoint is more reliable than trying to assign one permanent English translation.
