When お金 is the wrong word for money: いくら for prices, 現金 at the register, お会計 for the bill

お金 is the ordinary word for money as a general resource: money you have, need, use, save, withdraw, or pay. But English speakers often put “money” into sentences where everyday Japanese chooses a more specific phrase. Ask いくら for a price, name 現金 when cash is the payment method, and say お会計、お願いします when you want to settle the bill at a restaurant. The useful question is not only “What does お金 mean?” It is “What am I doing with money right now?”
Start with what is in your wallet
Imagine that you are meeting a friend for lunch. Before leaving home, you open your wallet and see one small bill. Here the subject is your available money in general, so お金 fits naturally.
あ、お金が足りない。お金が足りない means that the amount is insufficient. お金がない is broader and can mean that you have no money or that money is unavailable for the purpose being discussed. If you still have some but not enough for lunch, 足りない states the problem more precisely.
The お in お金 is part of the normal beginner word. It does not mean that you are respectfully talking about someone else’s money, and it does not make the sentence formal. Learn お金 as the everyday standalone form. You will see bare 金 in compounds and in some styles of writing or speech, but dropping お is not necessary to sound casual.
Stop at the ATM before lunch
You decide to get money from your bank account. In conversation, お金を下ろす is the useful phrase for withdrawing money. ATM screens and bank pages often use the more formal noun 引き出し, but the everyday action can still be described with 下ろす.
食事の前に、お金を下ろそう。At this point, お金 still names the general resource moving from your account into your hands. You could say 現金を下ろす when the contrast with a card or account balance matters. 現金 means cash available for immediate use, and in ordinary shopping it usually points to bills and coins. That makes it narrower than お金. Money in your bank account is お金, but it is not cash in your wallet until you withdraw it.
Ask the price without forcing お金 into the question
On the way, you notice a small shop and pick up a notebook with no visible price. English asks “How much money is this?” Japanese normally lets いくら do the work.
すみません、これ、いくらですか。You do not need これはいくらのお金ですか or お金はいくらですか. Those versions treat お金 as if every English mention of “money” needed a matching noun. In the shop, the object is already clear, and いくら asks for its price directly.
You may see 代金 on a notice or receipt. It means the amount paid for goods, and 料金 often labels a charge or fee for a service. Both can be objects of 払う. They are useful labels, but neither is required for this simple price question. Keeping them in their proper role prevents the lesson from becoming a list of words for money.
Name the payment method at the register
The notebook costs 600 yen. The clerk asks how you will pay. Now the distinction is not whether you possess money. It is whether you will use cash or a card, so 現金 is the useful word.
現金でお願いします。The particle で marks the means or method. 現金で払います is a complete statement meaning “I’ll pay in cash,” but 現金でお願いします is a compact, polite response at a register. The same frame works with another method, such as カードでお願いします.
There are also moments when お金を払う is exactly right. It names the broad act of paying money without making the method the point. At lunch, your friend reaches for the bill, but you want to treat them.
今日は私がお金を払うよ。This casual sentence tells your friend who will cover the cost. If the amount or item is already obvious, speakers can also omit お金 and simply say 今日は私が払うよ, “I’ll pay today.” Japanese often leaves recoverable information unstated, so the shorter version does not need a replacement noun.
Ask for the bill when the meal is over
After eating, you are ready to leave. Here お会計 means the bill or the act of settling it in this shop or restaurant context. You are not asking whether money exists, and you are not yet choosing cash or card. You are telling the staff that you want to pay and close the meal.
すみません、お会計、お願いします。This is a standard polite customer phrase. Once the staff presents the total or asks for a payment method, you can follow with 現金でお願いします or カードでお願いします. The sequence matters: お会計 starts the payment step, while 現金 identifies how you will complete it.

The best word changes because your task changes, not because お金 has stopped meaning money.
