お菓子(かし) is the broad everyday choice for snacks and confectionery. It covers chocolate, cookies, and cake, but it can also cover savory rice crackers and potato chips. スイーツ points specifically to sweet treats, often with a focus on Western-style confectionery. デザート names something by its place after a meal, and that can include fruit. The same cake might be お菓子(かし) while you shop, スイーツ while you discuss a café, and デザート when it arrives after dinner.

Start in the supermarket

Suppose you stop at a supermarket before going home. The sign for the お菓子(かし) section can lead you to chocolate and cookies as well as せんべい and potato chips. This is the first useful boundary: お菓子(かし) is not limited to food that tastes sweet.

The sentence leaves the choice open. You might buy candy, cookies, or a salty snack. In ordinary conversation, お菓子(かし) works naturally as a category without marking a plural.

Here, “sweet” would be the wrong English gloss. “Snack” fits because the item is salty but still belongs to the お菓子(かし) category.

Choose スイーツ when sweetness is the point

スイーツ means sweet foods and often brings Western-style confectionery such as cakes or pastries to mind. You will meet it in shop descriptions, features about new treats, and casual talk about going out for something sweet. It does not work as the broad label for salty chips or rice crackers.

This sounds like a place whose attraction is sweet treats. If you do not care whether the thing is cake, chocolate, or ice cream, everyday Japanese also has a simple option: 甘(かん)いもの, “something sweet.”

That sentence states the craving directly. スイーツが食(た)べたい is also possible, but 甘(あま)いものが食(た)べたい does not narrow the craving to a named shop category.

Choose デザート after the meal

デザート is defined by its role in the meal. It is what you have after the main food, so it can be cake or ice cream, but it can also be fruit. Calling fruit デザート is natural when the meal makes it the final course, even though fruit would not ordinarily be called スイーツ.

The important information is not how the fruit was made or how sweet it is. Its position after the meal makes it デザート.

Follow one pudding through the day

The overlap becomes easier to use when you follow the conversation. At the supermarket, you are filling a basket for the week. Pudding sits beside cookies and chocolate, so it can be part of the お菓子(かし) you are buying. The word answers a shopping question about the broad category.

Later, a friend tells you about a café. The café’s puddings, cakes, and parfaits are its スイーツ because the conversation highlights its sweet offerings. The food has not changed. The reason for mentioning it has.

After dinner, you take that pudding from the refrigerator and put it on the table. Now it is デザート because it completes the meal. This is why memorizing three separate English translations is less useful than noticing what the speaker is doing. お菓子(かし) groups the food with snacks and confectionery. スイーツ groups it with sweet treats. デザート places it after a meal.

Do not let the English plural decide

Japanese does not require these category nouns to mark singular or plural. In context, お菓子(かし)を買(か)った can describe buying one snack or several. If the number matters, the conversation supplies it. This is another reason not to translate the English word first and then choose by spelling. English “sweets” may point to the broad category お菓子(かし), the sweet-food label スイーツ, or a dessert served after dinner.

The reverse is also useful. If someone offers お菓子(かし), do not assume the plate must contain candy. If a menu has a デザート section, do not assume every choice is a baked confection. Listen for category, sweetness, and position in the meal.

What to say in everyday conversation

Begin with the situation rather than an English translation. When you are buying a mixed bag of snacks, offering a cookie, or asking whether someone eats snack foods, choose お菓子(かし). When sweetness itself is the subject, choose スイーツ or the very direct 甘(あま)いもの. When the conversation is about the final part of lunch or dinner, choose デザート.

You may see bare 菓子(かし) in compounds and category labels such as 和菓子(わがし), 洋菓子(ようがし), and 菓子類(かしるい). As a standalone word in everyday conversation, お菓子(かし) is the safer, more natural starting point for a beginner. The word itself is ordinary and works in casual speech. The beautifying お does not make the whole sentence formal. Politeness comes from the sentence around it, such as a です or ます ending.

Choose the word that tells the listener what matters in that moment.
