あくどい: when “bad” is not strong enough
Learn why あくどい criticizes an excessive, nasty method rather than anything merely bad, and how it differs from 高い, ずるい, がめつい, 派手, and しつこい.
あくどい is a strong, openly critical word for something that goes too far and becomes unpleasant or nasty. In the use most helpful for everyday decisions, it targets a method, tactic, business practice, advertisement, or other conduct whose excess makes it objectionable. “Unscrupulous,” “nasty,” or “egregious” may fit, but no single English gloss works everywhere.
That is stronger and more specific than simply saying something is bad. A high price can be bad for your budget. A bright poster can be easy to notice. A salesperson can send too many messages. Those facts alone do not make them あくどい. The word becomes useful when the speaker judges the way something is being done as seriously over the line.
Write the word あくどい in hiragana in ordinary modern Japanese. The seed spelling 悪どい is easy to understand because the word is usually negative, and some input methods offer it, but major dictionary guidance does not treat 悪 as the word's standard spelling. JMdict instead marks the kanji form 灰汁どい as rare and says the word is usually written in kana. For clear edited writing, あくどい is the safe choice.
A free trial that stops feeling free
Mika is comparing two recipe apps. One offers a cheap trial, but the annual charge is buried in small print and the cancellation button is hard to find. Her friend Ren looks over the page and says:
このサービス、解約ボタンを見つけにくくしてるなんて、やり方があくどいね。Ren is not merely saying that he dislikes the app. He identifies やり方, the method, and condemns the combination of concealment and inconvenience. This is a natural frame to remember: やり方があくどい. Other useful combinations include あくどい手口, あくどい商売, and あくどい宣伝. Public records independently attest 手口 and 商売 with あくどい, so these are not invented dictionary pairings.
The grammar is regular for an い-adjective: あくどいやり方 before a noun, やり方があくどい at the end of a clause, and あくどく見える in the adverbial form. The noun あくどさ means the objectionable excess or nastiness itself.
Do not skip from “expensive” to “unscrupulous”
Mika then notices that the second app costs more. Price alone does not reveal a nasty method.
料金が高いだけなら、「高すぎる」と言えばいい。Calling an ordinary high price あくどい would add an accusation that the facts may not support. If the service hides a charge, traps the customer, or uses a seriously objectionable tactic, あくどいやり方 can be exact. If you only mean “bad,” say what is bad: 高すぎる for too expensive, 分かりにくい for hard to understand, or 不便 for inconvenient.
This fact-first habit also keeps the word from becoming an empty insult. In a review, describe what happened before applying the judgment. In a private conversation, the shorter やり方があくどいね sounds natural once both people know the situation. Saying あなたはあくどい directly to someone attacks their character and is much harsher than criticizing one method.
ずるい and がめつい point somewhere nearby
ずるい describes someone acting cleverly or unfairly for their own advantage. It is common in everyday complaints and can cover a small act, such as changing a rule only after losing. あくどい usually raises the severity by presenting the conduct as excessively nasty or beyond the acceptable limit.
小さな注意書きで追加料金を隠すのは、ずるいというよりあくどいやり方だ。がめつい focuses on being grasping, tightfisted, or aggressively intent on profit. It judges the appetite for gain. あくどい judges how far the method goes. The two can overlap, but neither automatically proves the other.
店長はがめついけど、客をだますような商売はしていない。That sentence is still blunt and personal. In a real workplace, a factual description such as 利益に厳しい may be safer unless you deliberately want the insult.
The same core reaches color and taste
Dictionaries also record あくどい for a color, makeup, pattern, or taste that feels excessively heavy, garish, or cloying. The shared core is not “evil.” It is excess that leaves a bad impression. This branch explains why the word cannot be reduced to dishonesty.
ポスターは派手だけど、あくどい色使いとまでは思わない。派手 means showy, colorful, or attention-getting and need not be negative. あくどい色使い adds the speaker's judgment that the effect is unpleasantly overdone. For food, あくどい味 is dictionary-supported, but if you only want to say that a sauce is too rich or lingers unpleasantly, 味が濃すぎる or くどい will usually tell the listener more directly.
A similar boundary helps with pushiness. しつこい focuses on persistence that becomes annoying, such as repeated messages. It does not by itself accuse the sender of an unscrupulous business method.
セールのメールが毎日来てしつこい。でも、それだけで商売があくどいとは言えない。Follow the evidence in the scene
By the end of the comparison, Mika has three separate judgments. One app is expensive, one sends messages too often, and one hides a charge behind a difficult cancellation path. 高すぎる fits the price, しつこい fits the repeated mail, and やり方があくどい fits the last method. The strongest word lands on the strongest evidence.
That sequence also makes あくどい sound more natural: situation first, judgment second. With friends, それ、やり方があくどくない? is a conversational way to invite agreement. In a careful public complaint, give the verifiable details and then write あくどいやり方だと感じた, which clearly marks the evaluation as yours. The word is powerful because it does more than report a flaw. It says that the manner or degree crossed a line.
Pop quiz
A ticket site shows the full price clearly, but it is more expensive than you expected. Which response makes the narrowest claim supported by that fact?
- A. 料金が高すぎる。
- B. 商売があくどい。
- C. メールがしつこい。
Show answer
A料金が高すぎる。
A clearly displayed high price supports 高すぎる. あくどい would add a serious judgment about the method, and しつこい would require repeated, annoying behavior that the scene does not mention.

Meaning map
あくどい
excess in conduct or sensory effect that the speaker judges unpleasantly over the line
The branches share an evaluative core, but their English renderings differ. The word does not prove dishonesty, greed, or bad intent without facts from the surrounding scene.
an objectionable method or business tactic
客が気づきにくい追加料金を取るなんて、あくどいやり方だ。
Charging an extra fee that customers are unlikely to notice is an unscrupulous tactic.
The speaker condemns how far the method goes, not merely the price or outcome.
an unpleasantly overdone visual effect
広告の色使いがあくどくて、文字が読みにくい。
The ad's color scheme is so garish that the text is hard to read.
Here the criticism targets excessive color and visual heaviness, not dishonesty.
an excessively heavy or cloying taste
このソースは味があくどくて、少しで十分だ。
This sauce tastes so heavy that a little is enough.
This dictionary-recorded sensory use shares the overdone, unpleasant core; a more specific everyday description may often be clearer.
