ぐっすり: talking about deep, restful sleep
Use ぐっすり with 寝る or 眠る to describe deep, sound sleep, then add the time, interruption, or result that matters in the conversation.
ぐっすり is an adverb that describes deep, sound sleep. It answers a question about the quality or depth of someone's sleep: the person is well asleep rather than dozing lightly or waking repeatedly. Natural English translations include “soundly,” “deeply,” and, in a morning report, “slept really well.”
The most useful everyday partners are 眠る and 寝る. Both ぐっすり眠る and ぐっすり寝る are established patterns. You can optionally add と, as in ぐっすりと寝ている. Use ぐっすり眠れた or ぐっすり寝られた when reporting that you were able to sleep soundly, and the negative ぐっすり眠れない when deep sleep is not happening.
The National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics gives a revealing everyday exchange. An innkeeper asks politely whether a guest slept well with よくおやすみになれましたか, and the guest answers ぐっすり眠れました. In that exchange, よく眠れた is a broad “slept well,” while ぐっすり眠れた makes the depth and settled quality of the sleep more vivid. Dictionaries also explain ぐっすり with 熟睡する, but learner-facing examples repeatedly put the adverb directly before 寝る or 眠る. Those combinations are the practical phrases to make active.
ぐっすり does not by itself tell you how long the person slept or how quickly sleep began. If duration matters, add 一晩, 八時間, or 朝まで. If speed matters, add すぐに. A person might fall asleep quickly but wake many times, or sleep for eight hours without feeling deeply rested. The extra detail keeps the report accurate.
A quieter second night in a new apartment
Mari has just moved into an apartment near a railway station. She likes the short commute, but on her first night every passing train catches her attention. The next morning, one small conversation at work helps her talk about the problem clearly and report what changes.
First, Mari explains what happened:
電車の音が気になって、最初の夜はぐっすり眠れませんでした。The negative ぐっすり眠れませんでした does not mean Mari never fell asleep. It says she did not achieve the deep, settled sleep she wanted. That distinction is useful after a night of light sleep or repeated waking. The reason can follow or precede it: noise, heat, worry, or an unfamiliar bed.
Her colleague asks a natural follow-up:
「新しい部屋では、もうぐっすり眠れましたか」と同僚に聞かれました。ぐっすり眠れましたか is an ordinary way to ask about the result of someone's sleep. The potential form 眠れる matters here: the question is whether the new environment allowed Mari to get sound sleep. In a hotel, at a friend's home, or after a stressful week, the same pattern can show considerate interest without requiring medical language.
Mari says the noise is strongest beside the bedroom window. Her colleague offers one practical hope for the next night:
「今夜は耳栓を使って、ぐっすり寝られるといいですね」と同僚が言いました。Here ぐっすり寝られるといいですね expresses a warm wish. 寝る sounds completely natural with ぐっすり, just as 眠る does. The sentence names the practical change, earplugs, but makes no promise about the result.
That evening, Mari closes the window and tries the earplugs. The next morning she can give a precise report:
耳栓を使ったら、朝まで一度も起きずにぐっすり眠れました。朝まで supplies the time boundary, and 一度も起きずに supplies the evidence for uninterrupted sleep. ぐっすり gives the overall quality. You do not need this much detail every morning, but it is useful when explaining why the second night felt different from the first.
At work, Mari notices the daytime result:
昨夜はぐっすり眠れたので、今日は仕事に集中できました。This is a natural short report: 昨夜はぐっすり眠れた names the successful sleep, and the second clause explains why that matters today. Similar everyday follow-ups include feeling refreshed, having more energy, or waking before the alarm.
A good morning question is therefore not merely “How many hours?” Ask what the speaker needs to communicate. よく眠れましたか broadly asks whether sleep went well. ぐっすり眠れましたか focuses more specifically on sound, settled sleep. A reply can then add the concrete clue that made the night feel restful or restless.
Pop quiz
You stayed in bed for eight hours, but noise woke you several times. Which sentence reports the experience accurately?
Show answer
The interrupted choice separates duration from sleep quality: eight hours passed, but repeated waking prevented sound sleep. The sound choice contradicts the situation, and ぐっすり does not naturally modify 起きる.
