ちっとも means not even a little with a negative
Use ちっとも with a negative predicate for a felt “not even a little,” answer naturally when someone reports no progress, and choose ぜんぜん or 少しも when context or register points elsewhere.
ちっとも means “not at all” or “not even a little.” In its central modern pattern, it comes before a negative predicate: ちっとも動かない means “does not move at all.” The word adds the speaker’s sense that the result has not improved by even the smallest amount.
Learn the whole pattern as ちっとも + negative predicate. With a verb, use a negative such as ちっとも分かりません. With an i-adjective, use a form such as ちっとも明るくない. With a na-adjective or noun description, use a negative copula such as ちっとも静かではありません. The predicate may be plain or polite, but it still needs to be negative.
Dictionaries record older affirmative uses of ちっとも, but they are not the productive everyday target for an N4 learner. If you want to say “a little,” use 少し or ちょっと. For the useful modern meaning here, let the negative ending complete the expression.
Let the word carry a felt lack of progress
ちっとも does more than measure a mathematical zero. Research comparing ちっとも and ぜんぜん describes ちっとも as especially compatible with the speaker’s own sensation or evaluation. If you have changed a bulb twice and the lamp still does not light, ちっとも明るくならない lets the listener hear your felt “still not even a little.”
That emotional directness makes ちっとも common and useful in casual conversation. It does not automatically mean anger or complaint. ちっとも気にならないよ can reassure someone that a scratch does not bother you at all. Context tells the listener whether the feeling is frustration, surprise, reassurance, or something else.
Be more careful when the negative judgment targets another person. リクはちっとも手伝ってくれない can sound pointed because the speaker is evaluating Riku’s lack of help. Sometimes that direct criticism is exactly what you mean. If it is not, describe the concrete situation or ask what happened before assigning blame.
Choose ぜんぜん for an expectation or conversational answer
ぜんぜん + negative can overlap with ちっとも, and either may be possible in many sentences. A practical difference is what the speaker foregrounds. ちっとも often presents the speaker’s felt absence of change or degree. ぜんぜん is extremely common when a speaker rejects an expectation, comparison, or concern already active in the conversation.
If someone asks 古い傷は気になる?, ぜんぜん気にならないよ is a natural answer: “No, it does not bother me at all.” The question supplies the concern that the answer rejects. ちっとも気にならないよ is also possible, but it puts a little more weight on the speaker’s own felt lack of concern. This is a difference of framing, not a rule that bans one word from the other’s sentence.
At N4, keep the dependable pattern ぜんぜん + negative. Other contemporary uses exist, but you do not need them in order to make the contrast in this lesson.
Choose 少しも for more careful written wording
少しも + negative also means “not even a little.” Kotobank describes the negative use as making the degree zero and strengthening the negative feeling. Academic writing guidance commonly pairs conversational ちっとも with more written 少しも.
That makes 少しも問題がありません a natural choice in a careful inspection note. It does not mean that 少しも is forbidden in speech or that ちっとも can never appear in writing. Think of register as a tendency: ちっとも feels conversational and personally immediate; 少しも fits easily when the wording should sound measured or formal.
Repairing a lamp for the reuse table
Mina and Sota are checking an old desk lamp before placing it on a neighborhood reuse table. Mina presses the switch, but nothing changes.
ミナが「スイッチを押しても、ランプがちっとも明るくならないね」と言うと、ソウタは「ほんとだ。まず電球を替えてみよう」と答えました。The expected change is visible, and Mina feels that none of it has happened. Sota’s reply acknowledges the report and advances the repair instead of merely repeating it.
They install a new bulb and press the switch again.
ソウタが「新しい電球でも、ちっとも変わらない」と言うと、ミナは「じゃあ、別のコンセントで試そう」と提案しました。ちっとも変わらない reports the same frustrating lack of progress. じゃあ turns Mina’s reply into a practical next step.
The outlet works, so they open the base to inspect the cable connection. One screw will not turn.
ミナが「このねじ、ドライバーで回しても、ちっとも動かない」と言うと、ソウタは「それは困るね。少し油をつけようか」と答えました。Here ちっとも makes the failed physical effort vivid. それは困るね is a natural listener response because it recognizes the difficulty before proposing a solution.
After the connection is fixed, Sota notices several marks on the metal shade.
ソウタが「古い傷は気になる?」と聞くと、ミナは「ううん、私はぜんぜん気にならないよ」と答えました。ぜんぜん fits the direct rejection of a concern raised by the other person. The reply sounds relaxed rather than disappointed.
Before the lamp goes onto the table, Mina records the safety check.
点検表に、ミナは「コードには少しも傷がありません」と書きました。少しも keeps the same zero-degree meaning while fitting the careful written inspection record.
At last, the lamp turns on and stays bright.
ランプがつくと、ソウタは「最初は、これが直るとはちっとも思わなかったけど、交換会に出せるね」と言い、ミナは「よかった。次は傘を直そう」と笑いました。This final ちっとも looks back on Sota’s own earlier expectation. The successful ending gives the story a contrast: no confidence at first, then a lamp ready for everyday use.
In real conversation, first check the ending. If the predicate is not negative, the central ちっとも pattern is incomplete. Then ask what the sentence is doing. Are you voicing a personally felt lack of change? ちっとも is a strong choice. Are you answering a concern or rejecting a comparison already in the exchange? ぜんぜん may sound especially natural. Are you writing a measured record or formal statement? Consider 少しも.
Pop quiz
You have tried several outlets, but a small fan still shows no response. You want to tell a friend how completely it has failed to react. Which sentence fits best?
- A. 何度試しても、この扇風機はちっとも反応しません。
- B. 何度試しても、この扇風機はちっとも反応します。
- C. 何度試しても、この扇風機は少し反応しません。
Show answer
A何度試しても、この扇風機はちっとも反応しません。
ちっとも pairs with the negative 反応しません and voices the speaker’s felt “not even a little.” The affirmative ちっとも反応します breaks the central modern pattern. 少し反応しません does not naturally express the intended complete failure.
